Speaking of Survival is a course designed for adult
newcomers to the US learning ESL at the high beginner/low
intermediate level. S.O.S. is based on the premise that,
although the language of the student may be in the
developmental stages, his intellectual capacity is adult.
S.O.S., therefore, makes very conscious attempts to treat
the student with dignity and appeal to his cognitive
competence, curiosity, and need for helpful information in
the very real life situations he will be faced with. It
teaches English, it teaches culture, and it provides
practical detailed information on the basic survival
situation.
