Third grader Marķa Isabel, born in Puerto Rico and now
living in the U.S., wants badly to fit in at school; and
the teacher's writing assignment "My Greatest Wish" gives
her that opportunity. A Puerto Rican girl in the United
States resents the fact that her teacher calls her Mary
instead of Maria. Maria Isabel, a newcomer to the United
States, feels hurt when her teacher decides that the class
will call her Mary to distinguish her from the other two
Marias. But Maria Isabel is proud of her own name and can't
get used to the new one. This book tackles an issue familiar
to children in multicultural settings.
